Tackling Transition: A Focus on Your Teen’s Upcoming Years

Applied Behavioral Services is proud to offer transition services that prepare students for post-high school life. The Transitions Program focuses on transition skills needed to increase the student’s independence beyond high school, focusing on Section 5 of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Goals of the program include increasing the student’s ability to gain employment and live with increased independence, sustaining skills that can span over a student’s lifetime. Targeted programming and curriculum include soft skills for employment, skills needed to transition into adult day services, independent living, and leisure skills.

Additional Program activities include:

  • Assessment Kits: Kits prepare the student with skills for a workplace environment, employment, or daily living task.
  • Intern Opportunities: available for students in the Transition Program focuses on workplace readiness. The program includes working 1:1 with an assigned job coach in a supported working environment to practice independence in the workplace. The program includes state standard PRE-ET (Pre-Employment Transition Services Training) curriculum and on-the-job training.
  • Virtual Classes: Students enrolled with Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) also have the opportunity to participate in virtual classes with partners (IKRON, Easter Seals, etc.) for virtual sessions with the assistance of their job coach. Curriculum includes workplace social skills, job and career exploration, work-based learning, post-secondary transition, workplace readiness, and self-advocacy.
  • Community Living Centers: Community Living Centers are simulated environments including a laundry area, kitchen, and mock apartment. This program focuses on skill building and generalization of skills using the Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS) to increase a student’s daily living skills in the natural environment. Provides repeated practice of skills important for retention and independence. Supports those in the transition program that at the end of training and exposure may live independently or with in-home assistance.
